Project management

Project management is the application of knowledge,skilles,tools and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. Project management began to emerge as profession in the mid 20th century as before it has always been practiced independently and informally. Project Management fall into five groups : Initiating , planning , Executing , Controlling and Closing. It differs from other management systems and operations as it is a temporary process brings a unique focus shaped by goals, resources and schedule of each project . Project management has been developed and improved by many scientists who made researches to enhance this knowledge to be used in most of business works . Charles Babbage presented a lot of managerial ideas in his book ( The Economy of Machinery and Engineer as an Economist ) in 1886 where he displayed many of management and administration principles . And so many followed . Project Management has become an essential part of any project .Two method had been established to be used in many companies which are: 1. project Evaluation and Review Techniques PERT 2. Critical path method , CPM . In 1969 ” Project Management institute ” was established to teach this knowledge and so it becomes a profession not only ideas . The core components of project management are: 1.Defining the reason why a project is necessary; 2.Capturing project requirements, specifying quality of the deliverables, estimating resources and timescales; 3.Preparing a business case to justify the investment; 4.Securing corporate agreement and funding; 5.Developing and implementing a management plan for the project; 6.Leading and motivating the project delivery team; 7.Managing the risks, issues and changes on the project; 8.Monitoring progress against plan; 9.Managing the project budget; 10.Maintaining communications with stakeholders and the project organisation; 11.Provider management; 12.Closing the project in a controlled fashion when appropriate. Investment in effective project management will have a number of benefits to both the host organisation and the people involved in delivering the project. It will: provide a greater likelihood of achieving the desired result; ensure efficient and best value use of resources; satisfy the differing needs of the project’s stakeholders Project management, then, is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. But project management brings a unique focus shaped by the goals, resources and schedule of each project.
